09.00-09.30 Welcome back

It’s time to reinvigorate our minds with a performance from the Warrington BSL Signing Choir.

Location: Ballroom

09.30-10.45 From short to long-term thinking: is the real risk acting as if change can happen in months instead of years, decades and even generations?

Taking a long-term, collective approach can seem impossible when you are overwhelmed by the scale and complexity of immediate need. Hear from two different perspectives about why we have to resist the constant urge for immediate results and how they have instead brought people together to nurture gradual, deeper change over a longer horizon.  They will explore questions like what physical and social infrastructure will be needed and how can we build the skills, resources, relationships, knowledge, and imagination required?

Speakers: Tom Bloxham MBE, Imandeep Kaur

Location: Ballroom

10.45-11.15 Refreshments

Drinks will be served in the Whitworth Suite.

11.15-12.30 – Workshop Sessions Three, Big conversations: Imagining different approaches

3A) Creativity, Laughter and Fun – Step out of stress and re-connect with your playful side. This uplifting session will incorporate many playful activities:
imagination-based, word play, improvisation and some childhood classics. All activities develop transferable skills and a sense of creativity to channel into future projects!

Led by: Jess Shaw

SDG: 3

3B) Believing that alternatives are possible – In the face of existential crises and deepening social divides we’ll discuss how radical community foundations could and should be, and ask “are we acting in ways that are commensurate with the challenges we’re facing?”

SDG: 10

3C) Where next in endowment management? – Over the past decade, trusts and foundations have explored all sorts of approaches to manage their endowment in a more environmentally and socially conscious way. This session will touch on some of the limitations of those methods and hear from two place-based funders who are implementing different ways of ensuring their approach is participatory as well as impactful.

Speakers: Geraud de Ville de Goyet, Matthias Lomas

SDG: 11

3D) Engaging philanthropists of the future – How can we engage donors who are not only younger, but more racially, ethnically and gender diverse than traditional philanthropists?

Speakers: Aneil Gokhale, Fiona Oliver, Heather Hardin

SDG: 11

4B) Where next for collaborative funding? How do we build deeper, more strategic funding partnerships outside of periods of crises? – The pandemic drove all funders to work closely to align resources and streamline processes. The scale of our ambitions for the future should mean we can’t achieve these alone. This session will consider the challenges and opportunities for community foundations wanting to place themselves more firmly at the heart of a truly collaborative ecosystem of funding.

Speakers: Jim Cooke, Andreea Alexandrov

SDG: 10

4C) Finance teams of the future – We look at how finance teams can support strategic decision making by looking to the future, making long-term decisions, and helping organisations to be open to risk and innovation.

Speakers: Tim Gutteridge

SDG: 9

4D) Exploring radically different models of grant making – The pandemic has demonstrated that many of our previous notions of what good grant making looks like are based on habit and often designed to suit funders rather than grantees. In this session you will hear from grant makers operating in other sectors about why they are implementing a range of very different approaches such as partially randomised grants, and mission and challenge-led funding amongst others.

Speakers: James Wilsdon, Lene Oddershede

SDG: 10

15.15-16.30 – Workshop Sessions Five, Big conversations: Imagining different approaches

5A) Shifting from coping to preventing – how to be proactive in the face of future emergencies? – Community foundations have repeatedly demonstrated their capacity to act quickly and effectively in times of emergency. But as the severity and frequency of local and national emergencies increases, are we in danger of being overwhelmed? This panel session will explore how community foundations can act now to prevent and mitigate future disasters.

Speakers: Mhairi Sharpe MBE, Kathy Settle, Bruce Mann

SDG: 16

5B) Community philanthropy around the world – How can we develop community philanthropy? Our speakers represent organisations working to develop a culture of local philanthropy, strengthen civil society and support community organisations around the world.

Speakers: Jacqueline Asiimwe, Marija Mitrovic

SDG: 17

5C) Up to and beyond the Sustainable Development Goals – Working towards the SDGs is an intrinsic part of our work, here we can look at how serious are we as a network in supporting communities to be sustainable and how can we work together to create a healthier more equitable world.

Speakers: Dr Stefan Cibian, Dana Decent, Dr James Magowan

SDG: 11

5D) Demystifying responsible investment – Through responsible investment, investors can play their part in making the world a better place. But this is a field rife with confusing thinking and jargon. In this session our speakers will discuss why responsible investment matters, what the different types are, and how to work out which type might be right for you.

Speakers: Adrian Maxwell, Olivia Marlow

SDG: 8

5E) Codesigning Futures with the voluntary sector – a case study in embedding future thinking – As our communities change and evolve over the coming years, how can funders help them imagine alternate futures? In this session we will hear how a voluntary sector partnership in Wales embedded futures thinking into their work. “It’s vital that we take time to imagine the futures we want to see. Not just to grapple with what’s likely or possible, but to create positive visions for our future and plan how we can get there together.” – WCVA

Speakers: Eloise Smith-Foster, Anna Nicholl from WCVA
